Chicago firefighters encountered heavy fire and smoke showing from the sixth floor of a high-rise Friday morning.

"Squad one, when they arrived, they had a woman hanging out of the window on the fourth floor that was about to jump. I mean, normally a floor below is not an immediate concern for us, but she was in a position of panic and ready to go," ," CFD Deputy Dist. Chief Kelly Burns told reporters at the scene.

Firefighters used a tower to rescue her.

Two people were taken to hospitals in critical condition including a 28-year-old woman and a 62-year-old man.

While the building didn't have sprinklers, it did have smoke alarms that activated in the hallways.

One resident, one of many who didn't hear the fire alarms in their apartments, said he heard about the fire on an app on his phone.

Walking out of his apartment, he saw police and firefighters banging on doors to alert residents.

The cause is under investigation.
